Eighteenth-century London was a bustling entrepreneurial centre with a cosmopolitan concert life and a growing market for domestic music-making in wealthy households.

This musical richness of the city attracted many foreign musicians including George Frideric Handel. The musical items from Paris and Versailles performed in this program are by contrast uniformly in the style of Jean-Baptiste Lully, the fashionable director of music at the Court of the ‘Sun King’ Louis XIV of France.

The concert features heavenly trio sonatas, gorgeous pastoral folk tunes and intimate chamber music alongside stately works of grander scale.
