Spring Cycling Classic Returns to Orange

Bicycle Network

EVENT CANCELLED

Bicycle Network’s Newcrest Orange Challenge returns to Central West New South Wales as Australia’s spring cycling classic on Sunday 12 September 2021.

More than 1,200 cyclists are expected to take part in the fifth edition of the event that started in 2016 and has become a highlight on the New South Wales cycling calendar.

Bicycle Network General Manager of Events Rebecca Lane said it is exciting to return to such a beautiful part of Australia after COVID-19 stopped the event running in 2020.

“Spring is a great time of year to visit Orange and the Central West. Not just for some great riding in September sunshine but also to have a full weekend escape filled with food, wine and country hospitality,” said Ms Lane.

With three separate routes of 70 kilometres, 100 kilometres and 170 kilometres, cyclists of all abilities can test themselves on the rolling hills and country roads nestled among the region. The event is based in Orange and travels through Forest Reefs, Mandurama, Belubula Way, Canowindra and Cargo.

“The riding route can be challenging, but the beautiful scenery makes it worth it, and Bicycle Network will have your back with pre-ride training plans, food and hydration, mechanical and medical support.”

There is also an option for participants to increase their weekend spending money at the Prologue in the Park time trial race on the Saturday before the main event. A cash prize of $1,000 will be up for grabs for the fastest male and female to ride a special course in Orange.

COVID-19 safety plans are also being developed to manage physical distancing, hygiene and capacity requirements at event sites.

“To protect the local community and riders, changes will be made to how the event village, route and rest stops will operate. The size of groups and gatherings will be reduced, hand sanitiser readily available and surfaces regularly cleaned and sanitised,” added Ms Lane.

Early bird entries to Bicycle Network’s Newcrest Orange Challenge are now open at orangechallenge.com.au with a bonus jersey available for anyone who enters by Sunday 27 June 2021.

To give entrants peace of mind, a COVID ticketing policy has been created offering ticket credits or refunds if you cannot attend because of COVID-19. 2020 ticket holders have also had their entries transferred after last year’s event did not run.

The 2021 Newcrest Orange Challenge is supported by the NSW Government via its tourism and major events agency, Visit NSW. Newcrest is the event naming rights partner.
