Newcrest Orange Challenge is a true Aussie classic. Closed, car-free country roads are punctuated with pinchy climbs, rolling hills and challenging road surfaces that make the event no mean feat. Your efforts on the bike will be rewarded with sweeping views of the beautiful region., not to mention the crisp beverage waiting for you at the finish!
Choose Your Challenge
The 70km ride will see you tackle 770 metres of climbing. You’ll descend from the heights of Orange at over 900m, to the lowest point of 300m as you finish in Canowindra. But don’t be mistaken, there are still plenty of rollers, long false flats and short sharp climbs, requiring a good level of fitness!
The 100km ride starts in Canowindra, and along the way you’ll tackle 1430m of climbing through the beautiful Orange region. Enjoy the quiet country roads and virtually traffic free route, but don’t be deceived. You’ll still be tackling uneven road surfaces, long false flats and short sharp climbs that will put all your training to the test!
Starting and finishing in Orange, a 170km loop through NSW’s Central West Tablelands awaits you. However, this route is no simple cycle. With no short cuts, never ending hills, uneven roads and sharp climbs totaling 2,200 metres of elevation, you will be put to the test. There will be cut-off points along the route, so you’ll need to keep an average pace of 19km/h to complete the ride. It’s all worth it though, the virtually traffic-free route will have you fooled into believing that you’re riding your own European cycling adventure. A complimentary beer and sausage will be waiting for you at the finish site!

Taking on a long distance cycling event like the Newcrest Orange Challenge is no small undertaking, but we promise it’s hugely rewarding. Alongside the distance and elevation you will cover on the day, the nature of the rural roads will take its toll on you mentally and physically. Preparation is everything. Entering the event is your first stage but how do you go about tackling 170kms in the saddle?
1. Remember your goal
170kms isn’t a short distance to ride. Most people would think doing that in one day was a little bit mad. So, keep the slight ‘fear’ about your goal close at hand. There’s nothing like “a few butterflies when you think about the task at hand and how you will feel if you aren’t fully prepared on the start line” to get you out of bed.
2. Create a mental picture
Keep that image of you succeeding in your head. Imagine how amazing it will feel crossing the finish line, pushing your body to new boundaries, seeing physical changes. You are going to feel accomplished, satisfied, and definitely have earned you kudos on Strava and a beer on the finish line!
3. Get your friends and family involved
If you know you are meeting people for an early ride, you are more likely to do it. If your family are supportive in your goal, they will help drag you off the sofa and encourage you to train. Research shows that the support of those in the circle of influence around you can make or break your dream.
4. Get a coach
Sounds like an obvious one coming from me, but having someone watching your every move and getting on your back if you miss sessions is brilliant motivation. Also, having someone plan your training programme and progress you towards your dream means you are less likely to get injured, less likely to overload and more likely to stick to your training and achieve success.
5. Be prepared
Put your kit out the night before, right by your bed so you can just get up, get dressed, and get out. Fill your bottles, pump your tyres, get ride ready before you get ready for bed. Don’t sit down when you get home from work, get changed ASAP from work mode into sport mode, switch the physical to switch the mental.
6. Channel your inspiration
It could be a heroic story, a motivational quote or a specific person. Something that reminds of why you are doing what you are doing and gives you the strength to get out there and keep going. Many raise money for a charity as motivation, this is a great way to keep you committed to your training.
7. Make it visible at all times
Keep that dream in view and keep the constant reminder right there everyday. Pop your training plan up on the fridge door, stick photos, quotes, stories where you can see them. Connect with these visual cues as they trigger emotion and drive that expectation to succeed.
8. Remember how crap you felt
Remember how crap you felt on Tuesday when you didn’t get up and train?? Remember how you beat yourself up all day and ended up saying you’d never miss a session again? We’ve all done it and we’ve all still missed another session. Remember that crap feeling after skipping the sessions – let down, slobby, regretful. Now, replace those with how great you felt after training, accomplished, satisfied, happy, motivated to do it again.
