Nexas Quartet - Tango De Saxos (April 9th)
Nexas Quartet is the prime Australian Saxophone Quartet, comprising respected professional classical saxophonists Michael Duke, Andrew Smith, Nathan Henshaw and Jay Byrnes. Established in 2002 Nexas is no stranger to the Australian music scene, having performed in many settings from Uluru to Orpheus Island via the Sydney Opera House.
Virtuosity and versatility are the main features of this ensemble. With a fearless command in approaching original and contemporary repertoire, Nexas have commissioned and premiered numerous works by Australian composers, and exemplified this approach in their premier album Current. Their new recording project Tango de Saxos is a reflection of their musical passion, with arrangements and adaptations by the Nexas members, as well as original repertoire written for and by them.
Their extensive collaborations with Australian artists has seen Nexas deliver diverse programs all over Australia, including the Melbourne Recital Centre, The Street Theatre in Canberra, City Recital Hall and the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, to mention a few. Internationally, Nexas have presented Australian music at the World Congresses of Zagreb, Scotland and Strasbourg.
Most recently, Nexas Quartet co-produced the show ‘Composers in Exile’ with Australian baritone Peter Coleman-Wright AO and together toured nationally and regionally, releasing the ABC Classics album Ballads of the Pleasant Life.
In 2021, Nexas Quartet together with chilean pianist Daniel Rojas and Stephen Cuttris on bandoneon, will bring their brand new show Tango de Saxos, to celebrate the centenary of Astor Piazzolla in a journey through the history of Tango, from the formative years and Golden Age to Tango Nuevo.
